What is holding this scallop in place?
Can you see the tiny string-like fibers? Those are called Byssal threads and are an extension of the bivalve's muscular foot which allow it to hold itself in place.
Tearing these could cause damage to the foot and potentially kill the animal, so if you have one at home use caution if you have to move it.
